Cork town’s unique bicycle scheme
A West Cork town is set to introduce a unique bike hire scheme which is aimed at both tourists and locals. It is being launched by 10 hotels in the greater Clonakilty area next week.
The scheme, sponsored by Clóna Milk, is similar to ones which have been introduced in Dublin and Cork, but is the first in a rural area.
Tom O’Donovan, the proprietor of O’Donovan’s Hotel, said initially some 60 bicycles will be used, but depending on demand, the number can be increased.
“We will have docking stations at 10 hotels stretching over 18 miles [28km] from the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery to Courtmacsherry,” said Mr O’Donovan.
“We will also have another docking station at the Clonakilty Model Village.”
Locals will be able to get scheme membership for €20 a year. Visitors will get it for around €10, depending on the length of their stay in the area.
“The first hour of use is free. After that it is a euro per hour, with a maximum of €10 per day.”
Mr O’Donovan believes it will be a major hit, especially with tourists as “we have nine very accessible beaches in the area”.
Those signing up will also receive a special high-visibility jacket, a helmet, and an information booklet detailing cycle routes in the locality.
The scheme will be officially launched at O’Donovan’s Hotel at 7pm on Thursday, June 11.
Meanwhile, with the tourist season in mind, Clonakilty Tidy Towns volunteers are doing “double time”.
They are engaging in two clean-ups per week — on Thursday and Tuesday evenings.
The organisers are looking for additional volunteers and they meet at 7.30pm on both evenings at the Town Hall.
